Fiber supplements: psyllium, fluids, and medication timing
Soluble fiber like psyllium is a straightforward tool for many people—when used with enough water and spaced away from medicines.
Water is part of the therapy
Psyllium swells with liquid. Taking it dry or with too little fluid raises choking and obstruction risk. Follow label directions closely.
Separate fiber from prescriptions
Fiber can reduce absorption of some medications if taken at the same time. A common strategy is to move supplements a few hours away from critical prescriptions—confirm with a pharmacist.
New constipation or bleeding needs medical attention
Fiber helps many benign issues, but changes in bowel habits, unexplained weight loss, or blood in stool require evaluation—not more capsules.
