Probiotics, prebiotics, and fiber: what is the difference?

Gut health marketing blends probiotics, prebiotics, fiber, and enzymes. Here is a clean mental model so you do not pay for duplicate products by accident.

Probiotics are live microorganisms

CFU counts and strain lists describe how much live culture you swallow and which species are included. More CFUs is not automatically better; strain choice and your goal matter more.

Shelf-stable claims still require reasonable storage—heat and humidity can reduce viability.

Prebiotics feed bacteria you already have

Ingredients like FOS or inulin support microbes in the colon. They can cause gas when you first start, which is normal for some people.

Fiber supplements are not probiotics

Psyllium and similar fibers support regularity and can be part of a cholesterol-conscious lifestyle when used as directed with fluids. They work through a different mechanism than probiotics.
